BAGGU’s sustainability efforts are focused on the elimination and minimization of waste in their operations and production processes, in addition to minimizing the use of plastic bags. In BAGGU’s specialized construction process, the reusable bags are assembled from one continuous piece of recycled nylon material, with the neck of the bag used to construct the carrying pouch. This reduces waste while increasing durability. As BAGGU has grown over the years, they are continuously striving to better implement this design idea across their entire product line and commit more resources to operating and addressing sustainability throughout the company. Their Sustainability Team includes members from all of their departments who meet on a monthly basis to ensure alignment across the organization.
Designing for sustainability goes beyond using sustainable materials (which BAGGU also does) but it also means designing them to last and to minimize waste. BAGGU wants every bag they make to live a long, productive life so they prioritize quality, ensuring materials and construction hold up over time and age with character. They avoid chasing trends and want items to feel timely and relevant and stay true to their creative vision. Outside of reusable bags, BAGGU also creates hats and accessories, socks, homegoods, and more, all with the same thoughtfulness in sustainability.
As a company, BAGGU is guided by a simple but unwavering principle: Do the right thing. But what is the right thing for BAGGU?
Starting from their Spring 2022 collection, all of their ripstop nylon styles - including their signature reusable bags are made with 100% recycled materials. BAGGU’s heavyweight nylon styles are made with 50% recycled material. They use recycled nylon filament yarn produced from pre-consumer waste, which means saving scrap materials from being landfilled, and in turn helping conserve petroleum resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
With online sales increasing, BAGGU wanted to be mindful of the sustainability of their packaging materials and the shipping process for their products. While plastic poly bags are not the most environmentally friendly, it is the best way to make sure their products arrive undamaged to their warehouse and to their customers. Although it’s not a perfect solution, the impact from poly bags is ultimately less than that of discarding lots of dirty, damaged products. The team does their best to use them as sparingly as possible, packing multiple products in shared polybags for shipment to their warehouse and customers. The polybags are also certified 100% biodegradable, which means they
biodegrade in landfills. The polybags do what is needed to protect the item without compromising shelf life (unless placed in an active microbial environment, such as a landfill), and once they enter a landfill, an additive used in the bags attract microorganisms which decompose them.
