Administrative Professionals Day: Why Recognizing Your Support Staff Matters

Updated: Apr 10

Administrative Professionals Day is right around the corner, falling on April 26th this year. It's a day to celebrate the hardworking individuals who keep our organizations running smoothly. In a world that is increasingly fast-paced and competitive, administrative professionals are the unsung heroes who often hold it all together.

Administrative professionals are the backbone of any organization. They manage schedules, handle correspondence, maintain records, and support executives and teams in countless ways. They often go above and beyond to ensure that everything runs smoothly, enabling their colleagues to focus on their own tasks and responsibilities. Despite their vital role, administrative professionals don't always receive the recognition they deserve.

The origins of Administrative Professionals Day can be traced back to the early 1950s, when the National Secretaries Association (now the International Association of Administrative Professionals, or IAAP) was founded. The organization aimed to recognize the contributions of secretaries and administrative professionals to the workforce, promote their professional development, and attract more people to administrative careers.

In 1952, the first National Secretaries Week was organized by the National Secretaries Association, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Commerce and various office product manufacturers. It was held during the week of June 1-7, with Wednesday, June 4, designated as National Secretaries Day. The date was later moved to the last full week of April, with the celebration eventually becoming known as Administrative Professionals Week, and the day itself as Administrative Professionals Day.

Celebrating Administrative Professionals Day is an opportunity to show appreciation for these individuals, who work tirelessly behind the scenes. It serves as a reminder of their importance and encourages employees to express their gratitude for the support they receive from their administrative colleagues. The celebration also helps to foster a positive work environment, where each member of the team feels valued and motivated to excel in their respective roles.
